Rogue of the Week – Kris

What is your favorite distance and why?

Definitely the marathon distance. There is no greater feeling than crossing the finish line after running 26.2 miles.

What do you struggle with most in running?

Muscle cramps late in the marathon.  No matter what I do, I can’t seem to prevent them.  They are my nemesis and PR killers!

Do you rotate shoes and if so what is in your current rotation?

I do not rotate shoes.

Do you have a mantra that you use when you are racing/training?

My mantra has evolved over the years, but the current one is:  Be Strong.  Be Bad ass.  Be Rogue!

Do you ever feel unmotivated to train and if so how do you overcome it?

Yes, which is the reason I joined Rogue.  After years of training solo, my performance plateaued and then started to regress.  I needed a new source of motivation and this group has been the answer.  Now if I feel unmotivated, I look at the PR’s on the Rogue site for a motivational boost!

What is the best thing running has given you?

A year ago, I would have said a Boston medal, now I would say the people and friendships.  Rogue has made running fun again for me,while at the same time pushing me closer to my potential.  Running has also taught me to never give up on chasing your goals, no matter how out-of-reach they may seem when you set them.  In the end, hard work pays off.

What is your favorite race you have participated in and why?

Circular Logic Marathon in West Lafayette, IN (1 mile loop course).  This is where I finally got my first BQ. Unfortunately, this race is no longer held.  (Boston is my favorite race in terms of over all experience).

How did you get started in running?

My wife convinced me to run the Race for the Cure 5K with herein 2010.  My competitive juices kicked in soon after the starting gun fired and I left her behind.  After finishing that race, I was hooked!

What is your favorite running workout?

Tempo runs/interval runs.  Really any type of speed work because they break up the monotony of running straight, even-paced miles, and I like the feeling of finishing a hard workout.

How many marathons have you run?

16 so far!

Who is your favorite professional runner?

I don’t follow any professional runners.

What are the craziest race conditions you have had to endure?

I ran the Cleveland Marathon in 2011 & 2016 and both were miserable.  Cold, wind, rain, snow, sleet, hail, lightning.  You name it and I ran in it in Cleveland! (I feel compelled to say that I ran it in again in 2018 and the weather was perfect so Cleveland is not all bad.)

Do you have a goal race you haven’t done yet and why do you want to do it?

New York.  I have just recently set a new goal for myself to qualify for this race.

Do you listen to music while you run and if so, what music gets you pumped up for a race?

Not anymore.  I used to listen to music all the time when I ran but it has now become white noise so now it’s just me, the road, and my thoughts.  When I did listen to music, Muse and Green Day usually did the trick!
